Mean Girls meets Superbad, multiplied by Ladybird—with a freshly relatable and progressive female perspective that is grossly underrepresented in Hollywood. It's damn funny, emotionally real and just wonderful.
Two scenes stick out for their realness: One is the first-time sex scene, and not because it's sensational. Most of the humor was from teenagers being too much or adults trying a little too hard.
The eye-catching visuals never grow stale and are only enhanced by its bumping soundtrack and Olivia Wilde’s amazing casting and direction. The film doesn't shy away from unabashed sexual grossness but it's done with a gamine flair.

I love the story of Molly discovering that the reason everybody's her enemy is because she struck first. It starts off with Amy and Molly venting at each other and it just mushrooms from there. The entire class should've already graduated college by now. But, the 2 leads Amy (Kaitlyn Dever "Beautiful young boy ") and Molly (Beanie Feldstein "Ladybird") are a pitch perfect comedic duo that precludes warranting a do over...the two are seen on the outside looking in...Molly is unsinkable and unperturbed by the bubble she & Amy have been under for 4 years Her bubble bursts big time when enlightened by classmates she perceived foolish-they too got into top notch schools...She & Amy will make up for lost time by having the time of their lives on their last night.
I love Amy getting to be her own person. The film splashes into the foray of a "Superbad" genre starring Jonah Hill, Feldstein's sister. All in all, the best movie I’ve spent money on in some time. Booksmart" earns valedictorian honors & goes overboard with clever, laugh-out-loud, unexpected humor.
To the people saying the sex scene with the girls made them uncomfortable, you must have been watching through your fingers. This movie is so fresh, inventive and ... fair. The pacing on this film was right in line with a lot of comedy movies today .
Wilde brings something new & refreshing to the comedy genre of high school seniors, self-proclaimed losers, seeking to redeem their social status and achieve sexual conquests...inane casting of 20 somethings... " "Booksmart" makes top grades for its LOL ludicrousness.
scene actually showed less skin than the pool scenes, it was shot very carefully. To the people saying "This is terrible, watch John Hughes' instead", I've tried watching John Hughes movies, and they're painfully slow and creepily misogynist. The popular girls, the popular guys, no one's a villain.
There was slutshaming in it, but that was called out and pushed back against when it happened. It plays out exactly how a fight would play out between two friends who really love each other but are making the huge mistake in a fit of rage of being unflinchingly honest all at once about the stuff they've each been holding on to for years.
Neither was anyone's race or queerness. People disliked other people strictly based on behavior, and I think I would enjoy this movie even more the second time because I wasn't bracing myself. The other scene that sticks out is a big blowup between the two best friends: It's fair to all of the characters.
I also loved that Molly being fat was not a Thing in this movie. That The pool scene was more male gaze-y and it wasn't very. Satisfying comedies are hard to come by but Booksmart kept my friends and I laughing till the very end.
I could relate to everyone in it, even [the Plot Twist]. At the end of the film,
At the end of the film, I was crying and laughing. A bunch of us clapped as the credits rolled. I just felt ... good. I felt so good inside.there was plenty of time for a nuanced portrait of our protagonists. I really enjoyed that a very small percentage of the humor was either grossout humor or mocking teachers.
It is this very same edge that many conservative viewers may resent it for. It's just perfectly breathy and sweet ... and awkward and embarrassing.I'm a Gen-X'er, so I didn't spend my high school years glued to my phone, but this movie spoke so much me to otherwise.
Booksmart was funny and poignant, In other words, what a lot of people experience when it's their first time. No one feels like a cliche.
